Young Marine of the Year
About the Young Marines

The Young Marines is the official Youth Drug Demand Reduction Program of the United States Marine Corps, for the Department of Defense.  Although we employ and use certain military disciplines, we are not a military-recruiting organization.   Our members pledge to maintain, and actively demonstrate, a drug-free lifestyle within their community.  Adult Volunteers aid in instilling the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment so inherent to the American way of life, by teaching Leadership Skills for a Lifetime, beginning with youth age eight through the completion of high school.

Our program at the Unit level includes weekly meetings, community service and service to Veterans' and other Patriotic organizations, classes ranging from Personal Hygiene to Marine Corps History and Survival Skills, Encampments on many levels of the organization, and a large variety of other activities designed to motivate and inspire our youth to succeed.

Our National Headquarters also provides a series of Summer Programs (SPACES) and works with the Army Cadet Exchange (ACE) Program to send "the best of our best" abroad in Exchange programs.

Our Volunteers

Young Marine units are community-based programs lead by dedicated adult volunteers. Many of these volunteers are former, retired, active duty, or reserve Marines who believe passionately that the values they learned as Marines had a positive affect on them. It is through these caring adults that Young Marines learn the inner values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Adult volunteers are individually screened by the National Headquarters based on background information and recommendations provided with each person's registration.
Membership

The Young Marines is open to all youth ages 8 through completion of high school.

The only membership requirement is that the youth must be in good standing at school. Since the Young Marines’ humble beginnings, in 1958, with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to over 300 units with 14,000 youth and 5,000 adult volunteers in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and, Germany, Japan and affiliates in a host of other countries.
