YOUNG MARINE PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS

The Young Marine promotion requirements as set forth by National HQ are outlined below.  In addition to the below promotion requirements - ALL Young Marines must also meet the MANDATORY requirements: 

 

Oral Promotion Board -

 

Members of the oral promotion board at a minimum will consist of the unit executive officer, a Young Marine senior in rank to those standing the board, and at least one other registered adult. (When there is no Young Marine senior in rank, that slot will be filled by a registered adult) The review board will not be comprised of any relatives of Young Marines seeking promotion.

 

Physically Fit -  

 

Each Young Marine is encouraged to improve their physical fitness.  For those Young Marines who continuously give the effort to improve their scores - but sometimes fall short - recognition and praise will be given and if the Young Marine meets all other promotion requirements - at the CO's discretion the physical fitness score may be re-evaluated. 

 

Recommendation for Promotion -

 

to receive the recommendation for promotion of a Young Marine - the following areas may be considered:

 

 - citizenship and leadership 

 - school, home, and outside activities

 - attendance at unit events and meetings

 - maturity:  is the Young Marine mature enough to handle the recommended rank

 - has the Young Marine met all enabling objectives

You can also view the specific requirements that need to be verified for each YM rank and print the form containing a signature line for each Performance Requirement.

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS

 

 

1.  Earn the Basic First Aid Ribbon Award

2.  Complete the following Enabling Objectives:

 

PO1 - E05, E06, E07, E08, E09

PO2 - E01b-d, E04b-c, E08b (terms only in white)

PO3 - E01a, E02, E09, E010, E011

PO4 - E01

PO5 - E01a

P06 - none for this rank

P07 -  E02

PO8 - E01, E02

P09 -  E03, E04, E05d-e 

LANCE CORPORAL

 

1.  Earn the Community Service Ribbon Award

2.  Pass the National Written Basic Exam

3.  Meet all mandatory requirements for this rank

4.  Complete the following Enabling Objectives:

PO3 - E03, E04, E05, E06, E07, E012

CORPORAL

 

 

1.  Earn the CPR Ribbon Award

2.  Fill the billet of Flag Bearer or Team Leader

3.  Complete the following Enabling Objectives:

 

PO1 - E01, E02, E03, E04, E05, E06, E07, E08

PO2 - E01, E03a-d, E04a-h

PO3 - E01a, E03a, E04a-b, E05a, E06a, E07a-b

PO4 - E02, E03, E04, E06

4.  Fill the billet of Assistant Squad Leader and either Color Guard Rifleman or Squad Leader

5.  Complete the following Enabling Objectives:

 

PO1 - E09, E010, E011, E012, E013, E014

PO2 - E02, E03e-i, E04i-o

PO3 - E01b, E02, E03b-c, E04c, E05b-c, E08b, E07c-e

PO4 - E01, E05, E07

PO5 - E01b-c, E03

3.  Complete the following Enabling Objectives:

PO4 - E01, E02

PO5 - E01, E02

PO6 - E01, E02, E04

GUNNERY SERGEANT

 

1.  Attend and pass the National or accredited SLS

              ** (must be entered into database prior to promotion)

3.  Fill the billet of Platoon Sergeant and Unit Supply Assistant

4.  Meet all mandatory requirements for this rank

5.  Complete the following Enabling Objectives:

 

PO1 - E03, E04, E05, E07 thru E012, E015, E017, E018

PO2 - E03, E05

PO3 - E02, E03

PO4 - E03

PO5 - E03, E04

1.  Attend and pass the National Advanced Leadership School

2.  MUST re-certify in CPR

3.  Fill the billet of YM First Sergeant and either a Unit Adjutant Assistant, Unit Paymaster  

     Assistant or Unit Training Assistant

4.  Meet all mandatory requirements for this rank

5.  Pass the National Advanced Written Exam

6.  Complete the following Enabling Objectives:

 

PO1 - E03, E04

PO2 - E02, E03

PO3 - E03, E04, E05

PO4 - E03, E04

PO5 - E02, E05, E06

PO6 - E04, E05, E06, E08

* * * Meritorious Promotions. The only meritorious promotion may be those that finish in the top ten percent of recruit training. Meritorious promotions given at the conclusion of recruit training will be from Rct to PFC. The National Executive Director and the Deputy Director reserve the right to meritoriously promote Young Marines.

STThe ranks of First Sergeant and Sergeant Major are billet positions only.  Young Marines, upon appointment, are authorized to wear the appropriate chevrons during the time they are filling the billet only.  Upon completion of the billet period - the Young Marine will resume wearing his/her current rank.  If you have any questions regarding billet positions, please contact your Unit Commander or Training Officer.   2
