 | FULCRUM SHIELD AWARD The Fulcrum Shield project is more than just participating in Red Ribbon Week. It involves a year long outreach to the Young Marine units' communities to combat illicit drugs. Red Ribbon Week is a requirement for this award -- but that is just one part of the project. See below for more details. |
Units can use this project as the focal point in quite a number of ways:
Leadership training - setting up teams, organizing events, etc.
Education on local and county government - working with local agencies involved in combating illicit drugs
Completing Young Marine performance objectives
Publicity for the Young Marine program thereby increasing recruiting and fund raising efforts
Winning the award is important to the unit and the national program, but it is not the most important element. The teamwork, leadership, and personal growth that the Young Marines will receive by actively participating in this project are much, much more important. This can and should be a fun and educational project for the Young Marines. What the Young Marine's need is a little guidance and some mentoring and then let them do it (click here for Information Booklet).
ALL Young Marine units competing for the Fulcrum Shield are advised to contact the National HQ
for current submission requirements.
All Young Marine submittals MUST go through the National HQ.

A: The award is named in honor of the five military personnel from Fort Bliss who were killed in an airplane crash in 1999 while on a counterdrug reconnaissance mission in Colombia. The efforts of these brave men and women to keep illegal drugs from permeating our society, in tandem with programs like the Young Marines that challenge youth to retain a drug free lifestyle are essential to helping us accomplish our goals.
A: The Red Ribbon Week Observance is anti-drug education and drug abuse awareness program sponsored by the National Family Partnership. The focus is to educate individuals, families, and communities on the destructive effects of drugs and the positive alternative life choices that are available to our youth.
